ASCIICAM: VIDEO TO TEXTMONDAY, FEBRUARY 19 2007 @ 09:49 AMEver wondered how would you look in ASCII Art? no? I didn't think so... but here it is anyway: a quick video to ASCII conversion experiment I have put together, using BitmapData and a webcam as the video source. Of course it could be easily adapted to use an FLV, but I thought this way it would be more fun.
For now, you need a webcam to play with it, and I think it could be a little bit CPU intensive. On the other hand, I'm not sure if my selection of characters is the best right now: more variety of characters means a better image texture, the trick is to choose characters that will work regardless of their relative position, which is essential in manually generated ASCII Art. I was easily able to do full screen ascii with negligable processor hit...

My bud adam has had one of these up for a while http://www.dustypixels.com/blog/2007/01/19/realtime-webcam-to-ascii-converter-in-flex2as3/ TINKFEBRUARY 19 2007 @ 11:03 AMAh bugger, that is Adam above me. now i feel like a righ pratt (although thats nothing new ;))
OSCAR TRELLESFEBRUARY 19 2007 @ 11:18 AMYeah, Adam's is nice. Actually, I was thinking about adding brightness and contrast controls to my example, but looking at his experiment I've got a couple of other ideas too.
I made this one in response to a co-worker's question/challenge, so it required speed, not so much finishing ;) TOPTENMAY 10 2007 @ 03:29 AMtoo good
