FitC Toronto 2007

It’s been a couple of weeks since the event, but it is just now (flying back to New York from Denver, after Apollo Ranch) that I have a quiet time to write about my experience in FitC Toronto.

I had heard a lot of good things about FitC, and even came close to attend one time a couple of years ago, but now I can say it was one of the best conferences I’ve been to. The speakers line up was great, including not only the usual suspects, but also an important representation of local talent.

Probably the best and most inspiring of the sessions was the one delivered by John Maeda. Even though I have read some of his books, I never met him in person before, so I really didn’t know what to expect. However his talk on “simplicity” really prompted me to sit back and think about my work. A copy of his latest book, “The Laws of Simplicity”, should be landing in my hands shortly, and I’ll tell you all about it when I get to read it… but it is as inpiring as his presentation, I would highly recommend it.

I also enjoyed the “Red 5, the Musical” session, delivered by John Grden and Chris Allen, which opened the event for me and became and instant classic, at least in my book. Right now, I don’t remember the titles of all the sessions I attended, but most of them were related to exploring new tendencies in workflow for Flash development.

On the other hand, it was a great opportunity to reconnect with people I had not seen in a very long time, put faces to some names and just hang out with great individuals than happen to love Flash as much as I do. I specially enjoyed the time I spent with Lisa and Renee, Kristin, Lordalex, Carlos, Peter, John, Aral, Mario, Keith… and many others. And there was, of course, the parties: I really wish I could go out with friends more often, but partying three nights in a row made me realize how bad my shape is right now :)

I didn’t take many pictures, but here’s one I like, taken by Mario:
Men (and Women) in Black

Looking forward to the next time!
