Flashguru’s Autosave Panel

Sure we are all excited about all the new features of Flash MX 2004, but maybe the most exciting of all is the infinite extensibility the new Flash offers us all. On that, Guy Watson has created a useful extension to automatically save your work. Check it out here.

By the way, Guy has set up a new mailing list, dedicated to discuss Flash extensibility matters. I just subscribed to it, and if you are really interested in the subject, you should to.

Verizon DSL: Customer Service that really sucks.

I’m sorry if you had to read some offending comments on my last post, but if I haven’t been able to monitor my blog since yesterday, Verizon is to blame. Without any justification, they have disconnected my DSL service at home, and Isabel just had made things worse…

Since the beginning of my subscription, my charges for DSL service have always appeared in my phone bill and got paid altogether directly from my checking account. Now, I always have had enough money on that account to cover my monthly bills, so how come they claim I have unpaid charges with them?

Last week, and without any prior communication, I received a “Final Notification” from Verizon Online Services telling me that since I failed to answer their previous billing attempts (none), they will be ‘forced’ to cancel my account if they didn’t receive payment by September 22nd. We immediately call them, and they explained that even though Verizon accepts direct payments, Verizon Online only takes credit cards and checks, and that’s why they were unable to collect. So, why did they put everything together in the first place? that’s not my problem at all. To avoid any more complications, I wrote and sent a check with the balance they claim, even though we are yet to receive the refund they promised.

Yesterday morning, when leaving home, I realized I had no DSL connection… ok, that has happened before, so I just went to work. But when I got back, I still didn’t have service. When contacting Verizon Online technical support, they found out it was due to a ‘billing issue’. I was transfered to a billing representative, already knowing what this was about… wait a minute, we are on September 18th, it’s not even 22nd! Ok, as expected, the account had been canceled. To make things even worse for Verizon, I called my bank and they informed me that the check I sent was cashed on the 16th!

Today I tried to contact them again, but ut turns out that ‘Billing’ is located in Virginia and the call center has been evacuated because of Isabel.

So, in short, Verizon Online is making me lose a lot of time and money by disconnecting my service for at least 3 days, without any justification. My work depends heavily on my Internet service. I just wonder if they will ever make it up to us in a reasonable way. At least the guys at Domino’s give us free pizza when they screw up…

Here it is, your Flash MX 2004 crack

Well, since so many people is looking so desperately for it, I had to make it available. Click here to download my very own serial number generator for Flash MX 2004. I hope you enjoy using it as much as I enjoyed developing it!

Ok guys, I’m sorry if for any reason you ‘need’ to support software piracy, but the crack provided above is not real, it was intended as a joke.

I will never provide such a ‘tool’, not in this site, not by email, or any other imaginable channel. Thanks for understanding.

New Blogs in the Block

Over the past week, new Flash bloggers have made their introduction to the community. All of them are already well-known names for the community, starting with Dave Yang and Peter Elst, and followed by Owen van Djik and Robin Debreuil, both of them with significant OOP-Flash background, and loads of experience to share with us all.

Updates to my list of link coming soon, and at this pace, I will have to figure out a better way to organize those links. The list is getting real long….

PHP and Corporate America

As more and more corporate organizations embrace open source software and adoption of Linux and Apache becomes an option in the IT agenda, mission critical web applications written in PHP start to proliferate. Last Netcraft survey shows that Apache accounts for over 63% of the web server market across domains, while PHP reaches 26% of all domains on the Internet. All of those servers running PHP are Linux-based, right? Wrong.

To suit site owners need for more sophisticated web applications with the best possible return on investment, PHP is moving toward the Windows operating systems. No, it’s not a contradiction. Some businesses can’t afford the learning curve associated to assimilating Linux into the company dynamics. However, many of them might find running Apache on Windows an affordable alternative to Microsoft’s Internet Information Server.

As a matter of fact, nearly 7% of all PHP servers run on Windows. Netcraft’s survey of scripting languages developers show this is an increase of almost 100% over the past year. At that rate, PHP could easily overcome ColdFusion as the most popular non-Microsoft scripting language out there.

ActionScript Live Reference

Are you familiar with PHP.net’s online manual? If your answer is yes, you have already experienced the goodness of a community-driven language reference, where entries for functions and objects are not only descriptive, but enriched with examples and comments from users. The idea of something like this for ActionScript has been out there for some time now, but nobody actually put it to the works, until some weeks ago.

The beta version of ActionScript.com’s ActionScript Reference is up, running and looking for more contributors. So far, about 180 entries documenting different aspects of actionscripting fill in the Reference, including some undocumented features.

Question: how long until we see AS 2.0 features documented over there?

IE and plug-ins: What happens next?

Last thing I knew was that Microsoft was in trial for supposed infringements to Eolas patent over including plug-ins and applets in Internet Explorer. Patent fights are not news today, as everyday someone appears holding a patent for “hot water”. But this issue is especially important for us, as it jeopardizes the way we use Flash nowadays, and it is not exclusive to Internet Explorer, as it represents a potential threat to other browsers like Netscape and Opera.

Read the story at CNet News, InforWorld.

This probably won’t be set before the end of the year, but people from Microsoft are already preparing for the worst.

Cracking Studio MX 2004 already?

Man, it’s been only 2 days since Macromedia released the new versions of Dreamweaver, Fireworks and Flash, and I already have registered visits to my site coming from curious search engine searches.

I just found phrases like “dreamweaver mx 2004 activation code”, “flash mx 2004 crack”, “unlock studio mx 2004″, and others when taking a look at my stats page. This post by Navneet Nair made me wonder if I was getting that kind of traffic too.

C’mon guys, if you want cheaper software you gotta stop doing this. If you are a student, you can try the Educational versions of Studio MX 2004.

Flash Player 6 to 7 headaches

Now that version 7 of the Flash Player has reached out from the beta stage and become the latest official version, you may find some trouble accommodating your code for it. Take your time to review your scripts and try them out with the new version of flash to find out if they still work as intended.

Even if you export your work for version 6 of the player, you may want to refurbish your code and reform your ActionScript programming anyway, to work with Flash 7; after all, version 7 is what its being installed in users computers from now on, and you don’t want to redo your work anytime soon.

Give special consideration to case sensitivity. It wasn’t supported in previous versions of Flash Player, unless you specifically asked for it invoking the undocumented #strict pragma. As you can read in the documentation provided in the Flash MX 2004 download, case sensitivity in Flash Player 7 affects not only internal and external variable names, but files loaded with #include.
